Maury Island Mining Project: Permanent Preservation

Beach and Bluffs Permanently Preserved

Glacier Northwest is offering to grant the state Department of Natural Resources two permanent conservation easements totaling approximately 75 acres – nearly 54 acres of bluffs overlooking Puget Sound and about 21 acres of nearshore, beach habitat. The bluffs and beach area easements will preserve the Puget Sound tidelands and overlooking bluffs for nearly a mile along Glacier’s site. The undisturbed bluffs will provide a visual buffer between much of the site, Puget Sound and site neighbors and will continue to feed the beach with sand and gravel to maintain its natural functions. Glacier’s lease of state-owned bedlands, which are perpetually beneath the waters of Puget Sound, amounts to approximately six acres and covers an area larger than where its replacement dock will be located. The conservation easements represent a significant and valuable grant of property rights and are a critical component of the project’s success in furthering the objectives of the Maury Island Aquatic Reserve Management Plan.
